Based on state-of-the-art high speed digital signal processing technology such as Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and wireless sensor technology, IND Technology has designed an Early Fault Detection (EFD) system that remotely monitors and detects partial discharges on overhead distribution lines and underground cable systems on a continuous 24/7 basis.

As the operating service provider, IND Technology provides power utilities and owners of high voltage assets an early warning diagnostic system that detects defects that occur randomly and spontaneously on a range of power assets including poles and wires, where the early warning diagnostic system detects:

  • Pole top fires and smouldering
  • Vegetation faults
  • Surface pollution on high voltage insulators
  • Partial discharge in bushings, cables and switch gears
  • Surface defects and insulation defects of outdoor high voltage in their early stage of development

Using the EFD system, engineers can identify corona discharges due to vegetation contact, surface discharges due to surface contamination, defects on pole top equipment such as insulators, surge arresters and power transformers. The main features of our Early Fault Detection (EFD) system include:

  • Long distance coverage to reduce the cost of the system roll-out (suitable for radial or mesh network structure)
  • Implementation of time-of-flight algorithm to locate partial discharges without requiring knowledge of line impedances
  • Wireless sensing technology to minimise disruption to power supply during installation and maintenance
  • Simple and user-friendly condition reports that assist Asset Maintenance teams to prepare condition-based maintenance schedules
  • FPGA-based signal processing technology to provide real-time data processing and pattern recognition capability

The Early-Fault-Detection (EFD) system is designed to provide an affordable remote monitoring capability to power distribution companies. The EFD system can be implemented in overhead or underground distribution power lines as well as substations, both indoor and outdoor.
